Ankota Releases AI-Enabled Invoice Review for Self-Direction and Self-Determination FMS Organizations

          For Immediate Release:  August 31,2026

Ankota Releases AI-Enabled Invoice Review for Self-Direction and Self-Determination FMS Organizations

Invoice review is unbillable work for FMS providers. Ankota’s new capability checks supplier, date, budget and authorization before the invoice reaches a human reviewer.

BOSTON, Massachusetts - Ankota LLC, a company focused on providing software to agencies that keep older and disabled people living in their own homes, has introduced a major enhancement to its product for managing self-direction and self-determination programs. The new feature uses AI to preprocess invoices to determine whether they are compliant and ready for billing.

Self-direction programs empower families, but they also create real administrative burden. In that model, fiscal intermediaries (FIs) and financial management services (FMS) providers are typically able to bill their payers only a transaction management fee, rather than setting a profit margin. Their success depends almost entirely on how streamlined their operations are. This new upgrade removes a significant portion of that burden.

“This is an outstanding use of AI,” said Ken Accardi, CEO of Ankota. “Using computer vision and algorithms to make sure that the invoice date, the supplier, the authorization and the budget all line up is a great way to cut down on the overwhelming burden that FMS operators are facing.”

One of the most important features in Ankota’s core product is its AI-based approval assistant for electronic visit verification, which reviews every visit delivered by a service provider to confirm that it is compliant and carries the correct attribution to tell the state aggregator that the visit was reviewed and validated by the agency. In the FMS world, that is only half the picture. Alongside the work completed by direct service providers, many of the services delivered to participants are billed directly by the providers themselves. Those can range from professional services such as physical or occupational therapy to residential stipends or summer camp programs. Reviewing every one of those invoices to determine whether it is acceptable to be forwarded for payment can overwhelm an FMS agency.

“We are constantly evolving and sharpening our products in large part due to our partnerships with new clients in new states,” Accardi added. “Now serving customers in 18 states, we problem solve by listening to the challenges of each individual state’s regulations and build our systems based on the real-time feedback and conversations that simply lead to better care management for those who need support in their home.”

Ankota began its self-direction journey by supporting the Consumer Directed Services program in Missouri and has since expanded into North Carolina and California. In California, where self-determination services are administered through 21 regional centers, Ankota currently supports billing and service delivery across 15 of them.
